Ecuador / ˈ ɛ k w ə d ɔːr /  ( About this sound listen ) , officially the Republic of Ecuador (Spanish: República del Ecuador ; pronounced  [re̞ˈpuβlika ðe̞l e̞kwaˈðo̞r] , which literally translates to the Republic of the Equator ) is a representative democratic republic in South America , bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is one of only two countries in South America, along with Chile , that do not have a border with Brazil. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) west of the mainland. The main spoken language in Ecuador is Spanish. Ecuador straddles the equator , from which it takes its name, and has an area of 272,046 km 2 (105,038 sq mi). Its capital city is Quito , which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the 1970s for having the best preserved and least altered historic centre in Latin America. [7] The country's largest city is Guayaquil . The historic centre of Cuenca , the third largest city in the country, was also declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, for being an outstanding example of a planned inland Spanish style colonial city in the Americas. [8] Ecuador is also home—despite its size—to a great variety of species, many of them endemic , like those of the Galápagos islands . This species diversity makes Ecuador one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world. [9] The new constitution of 2008 is the first in the world to recognize legally enforceable Rights of Nature, or ecosystem rights. [10]

Ecuador is one of only 17 megadiverse countries in the world according to the World Conservation Monitoring Centre , an agency of the United Nations Environment Programme (see biodiversity below). It's a paradise for scientists and tourists alike. Within just a 300 Km radius one can access almost as many ecosystems as all those found across the United States. Ecuador has more endemic plant species than the United States together (see the biodiversity theme report in megadiverse countries ).

The Republic of Ecuador was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Venezuela ). Between 1904 and 1942 , Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999 , although Peru still occupies and claims a large portion of territory to the east of Ecuador that was once Ecuadorean territory and which Ecuador still considers to belong to Ecuador.
